Restaurante Lardo, Italian-Mexican Fusion at Its Finest

A restaurant from one of Latin America’s Best Female Chefs and Jess’ favorite place to eat in Mexico City.

Elena Reygadas was named Latin America’s Best Female Chef in 2014, and her first restaurant, Rosetta, was on Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants list. We didn’t make it to Rosetta (we made the unfortunate mistake of checking our credit card statements halfway through our trip), but we ate at her latest Italian restaurant, Lardo… twice. The first time because it was downstairs from our Airbnb in Condesa and it was convenient for dinner. The second because cravings called us back and we wanted to try their brunch. Both were delicious.

Chef Reygadas is famous for her bread and everything we tried from Lardo’s wood fire oven was a winner. Our favorites were the jamón baguette sandwich at brunch and chorizo y burrata pizza at dinner. We also enjoyed the croque madame and arroz negro with leche de coco topped with plátano y mango.

Quality ingredients prepared simply. That’s the formula for the best Italian food and the one that’s followed here. Sit at the long copper bar to watch the chefs work their magic, or swing by their street-side window for pasteles and a latte.
